NAHUA STAGE CREATOR

Enrique Melgarejo, winner of the National Dance Award, is considered by many to be one of the best Mexican contemporary dancers of his generation. He was born in Mexico City to an Indigenous family descended from the peoples of the central region of the country. His paternal grandparents come from the Nahuatl communities of Apan (Hidalgo) and San Lucas Tunco (State of Mexico), while his maternal grandparents are originally from El Aguaje Elota (Sinaloa). Proud of his Indigenous roots, he describes himself as an urban Indigenous person and uses his art as a tool for the decolonization of Mexican identity and social criticism.

His beginnings as a performer led him to dance, and he studied at the National Institute of Fine Arts. He later expanded his performing skills with studies in Theatre and Physical Masking with Foco al Aire. His talent soon became apparent, and he was selected to star in productions at the country's leading theaters: the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Teatro de la Ciudad, and the Foro Shakespeare. He worked with leading directors and choreographers such as Damian Jalet, Xavier Le Roy, Alicia Sánchez, and Alfonso Ruizpalacios, and shared the stage with leading artists such as Natalia Lafourcade, Yansi Méndez, and Aladino Blanca.
